Marble Cliff
Columbus’ Hidden Suburb

From Carol Ottolenghi, for About.com

Marble Cliff homes feel far away from the busy city...even though they're in the middle of it.

Marble Cliff Overview:
The Village of Marble Cliff carves out a tiny sliver of land between Columbus, Grandview, and Upper Arlington. It’s so small that many Columbus natives don’t even know it exists. It squeezes between:

  • Fifth Ave. on the north;
  • Riverside Dr. along the Scioto River on the west;
  • Down the middle of the backyards between Cambridge Blvd. and Lincoln Rd.

The Village was one of Columbus’ early suburbs. Its stately homes and manicured landscaping are within minutes of live shows, music, restaurants and pro sporting events. In 2006, Columbus Monthly chose Marble Cliff as one of Central Ohio's best neighborhoods and top places to live.

Village administrators estimate that in 2006, about 565 people called Marble Cliff home.

Apartments and Real Estate:

Marble Cliff has a few multi-family units, but not many. Apartments and condos are more plentiful in nearby Upper Arlington and Grandview.

Marble Cliff housing is high-priced for the Columbus area. Many of the homes date from the 1920s, when the money was flowing and the families were large. The residents want to maintain the Village's atmosphere, so building, fences and signs are carefully regulated. And, there are NO garage sales allowed.

Schools:
Marble Cliff is in the Grandview School District: (614) 481-3600

Restaurants and Bars:
Marble Cliff doesn’t have much space for restaurants and bars. Fortunately, there are dozens of places like Spagio’s and Aladdin’s within walking distance along Fifth Ave. and in nearby Grandview. A few minutes by car gets you to Barley’s Smokehouse & Brewpub on Riverside Dr., or Cap City Diner on Olentangy River Rd.

Parks and Recreation:
The parks below are open 6 a.m. – 10 p.m. year around. Dogs are NOT permitted in the parks.

  • Paul J. Falco Park on Fernwood Avenue;
  • Tarpy Woods at the south end of Cambridge Blvd.

The Grandview Recreation Center, Senior Center, shelter houses, and tennis courts are available to Marble Cliff residents. Call the Grandview Heights Parks & Recreation Department, (614) 488-3111, for details.
