Home to the Memorial Golf Tournament, Muirfield Village, the Columbus Zoo and more, Dublin is probably the most well-known Columbus suburb.
With a population of over 23,000, Dublin is also one of the largest suburbs because it is home to numerous corporate headquarters, two malls, one historic downtown district, and more. As one Web site says, "there is always something happening in Dublin."
Dublin was originally part of 2,000 acres of land once occupied by Hopewell, Adena, Delaware, Shawnee, and Wyandot Indians and given to Lieutenant James Holt as payment for his service in the Revolutionary War. Eventually 400 acres on the banks of the Scioto River were purchased by the Sells family in 1802, and the Sells Mills settlement was born. Once considered as a site for the state capital, Sells Mills was renamed Dublin in 1815 by an Irish surveyor and was incorporated as the village of Dublin in 1881.
Dublin remained a rural village until the 1970s, which saw the completion of the I-270 Columbus outerbelt; Muirfield Village golf club and residential community; Ashland Chemical; and the Metro Center complex. Historic Old Dublin remains a preservation of the original Dublin, with over 30 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
