Bexley's beginnings can probably be traced to Capital University. Originally located at Goodale Park on the near north side, Capital relocated to its' current Bexley campus in 1876. Professors began to build homes in the area, and growth slowly occurred into the early 20th century.
By 1905, efforts were being made by community groups to beautify the area and attract new development. These groups joined forces to incorporate the area; the name Bexley was chosen in honor of the location in England of the family estate of Colonel Lincoln Kilbourne, an early settler of Bexley. The village of Bexley officially came into existence in the summer of 1908.
Bexley reached city status in 1931, which requires 5,000 residents in the state of Ohio. Growth would soon come to an end, however, with the city of Bexley quickly becoming surrounded by annexations to the city of Columbus. Bexley's current population is 13,000.
While "new money" areas like Powell and New Albany are booming, Bexley remains a viable community. Quiet, tree-lined streets host houses ranging from middle class homes to full-fledged mansions. Bexley schools are consistently rated among the top districts in Ohio, and property values remain among the highest in Central Ohio.
