Here's a question I've heard many times. Follow these directions and get your Ohio driver's license.
Difficulty Level: hard Time Required: weeks
Here's How:
- Visit http://www.ohio.gov/odps/division/bmv/dep25.html to find the deputy registrar nearest you.
- Visit registrar to get a temporary permit packet for about $8.50 (fee will vary; visit www.ohio.gov/odps/division/bmv/ol_fees.html for a list of driver exam fees).
- Take proof of age and your social security number when picking up the temporary permit packet.
- If you are 15 ½ to 17, you will need to take a parent or guardian with you; they will also need proof of age and social security number.
- Study the temporary permit materials. If you lose them, you must purchase another packet and start over.
- Visit http://www.ohio.gov/odps/division/bmv/wrtntest.html for a brief description of the written test.
- Then contact an Ohio Driver License Exam Station (visit http://www.ohio.gov/odps/division/bmv/dx25.html for the location nearest you).
- An appointment is not necessary but calling ahead to verify hours is advised.
- Pass the written and vision exams and receive your temporary drivers permit.
- It is recommended you practice driving ten hours before taking the road test. You can only practice driving if there is a person age 21 or older with a valid Ohio drivers license in the front seat with you. If you are under 18, 50 hours driving experience is required.
- Contact an exam station to schedule a road test. You must be at least 16 years old. Be prepared to take a driving test and a maneuverability test. Bring your own car and make sure it is in good condition.
- Visit http://www.ohio.gov/odps/division/bmv/drvtest.html and http://www.ohio.gov/odps/division/bmv/mnrvtest.html for details about the driving and maneuverability tests.
- If you are under the age of 18, you will need to present a Drivers Education Certificate. You will also need to hold your temporary permit for at least six months before you can receive a license.
- When you pass the road test you will be given an exam passed form. Take the form to a deputy registrar and for $9.75 you will receive an Ohio Drivers License.
- Contact the Bureau of Motor Vehicles at 1-800-462-2269 if you have
questions.
- You cannot drive (even with a licensed driver) until you pass the written exam and vision test.
- Ohio's Financial Responsibility Law requires you to sign a form acknowledging all of the penalties that can be imposed for driving without insurance. Visit http://www.state.oh.us/odps/division/bmv/proof_fr.html for details.
- If you have a valid out-of-state license and move to Ohio, take it to your
nearest exam station for a written test and vision test. The road test is generally waived.
