Since Columbus is the capital of Ohio, I get a lot of emails asking for information about
state government, history, symbols, etc. Capital Roundup is my evolving attempt at
answering all of these government questions. If you need more information please email me. Capital or Capitol Over the years I've heard arguments about whether Columbus is the capital or the
capitol. According to my dictionary, the capital is the seat of government; the
capitol is "the buildings where the functions of state government are carried
out". Since this article discusses both the seat of government and the buildings where
government is carried out, I will use the word capital unless specifically discussing a
state government building. Columbus Here is my history of Columbus as its' creation as the state
capital. Why wasn't the capital city named Franklinton? Franklin County was named in honor of
Benjamin Franklin who died at the time of its creation; Columbus was named in honor of
Christopher Columbus. Exactly why Columbus was chosen as the name I cannot verify;
"High Bank" and "Ohio City" were considered but failed to pass a vote.
It seems since Columbus was the state capital it had the power and size to eventually gobble up
Franklinton. Columbus' namesake: here is a look at Christopher Columbus
and what he was hoping to find in his explorations. News
