How To Get an Ohio Drivers License

By John Kazalia, About.com

Here's a question I've heard many times. Follow these directions and get your Ohio driver's license.
Difficulty: Hard
Time Required: weeks

Here's How:

  1. Visit the Ohio BMV Web site to find the deputy registrar nearest you.
  2. Visit registrar to get a temporary permit packet for about $8.50 (fee will vary; visit www.ohio.gov/odps/division/bmv/ol_fees.html for a list of driver exam fees)(this is proposed to increase to balance the state budget).
  3. Take proof of age and your social security number when picking up the temporary permit packet.
  4. If you are 15 ½ to 17, you will need to take a parent or guardian with you; they will also need proof of age and social security number.
  5. Study the temporary permit materials. If you lose them, you must purchase another packet and start over.
  6. Visit the BMV test page for a brief description of the written test.
  7. Then contact an Ohio Driver License Exam Station (visit http://www.ohio.gov/odps/division/bmv/dx25.html for the location nearest you).
  8. An appointment is not necessary but calling ahead to verify hours is advised.
  9. Pass the written and vision exams and receive your temporary drivers permit. It is recommended you practice driving ten hours before taking the road test.
  10. You can only practice driving if there is a person age 21 or older with a valid Ohio drivers license in the front seat with you. If you are under 18, 50 hours driving experience is required.
  11. Contact an exam station to schedule a road test. You must be at least 16 years old. Be prepared to take a driving test and a maneuverability test. Bring your own car and make sure it is in good condition.
  12. Visit http://www.ohio.gov/odps/division/bmv/drvtest.html and http://www.ohio.gov/odps/division/bmv/mnrvtest.html for details about the driving and maneuverability tests.
  13. If you are under the age of 18, you will need to present a Drivers Education Certificate. You will also need to hold your temporary permit for at least six months before you can receive a license.
  14. When you pass the road test you will be given an exam passed form. Take the form to a deputy registrar and for $9.75 you will receive an Ohio Drivers License.
  15. Contact the Bureau of Motor Vehicles at 1-800-462-2269 if you have questions.

Tips:

  1. You cannot drive (even with a licensed driver) until you pass the written exam and vision test.
  2. Ohio's Financial Responsibility Law requires you to drive with insurance. Visit their financial responsiblity page for details.
  3. If you have a valid out-of-state license and move to Ohio, take it to your nearest exam station for a written test and vision test. The road test is generally waived.
