Northern Kentucky Day Trips

Different View of Cincinnati

By John Kazalia, About.com

Northern Kentucky has several bed-and-breakfasts you can stay in and soak up the local history. Here are two my wife and I have stayed at:

  • Amos Shinkle House is a classic 1850's townhouse set in an area of dooryard gardens and buildings, some rooms are in a separate building.
  • Licking Riverside B&B is in a red brick Greek revival home. We were a bit disappointed in our microwaved breakfast but otherwise enjoyed our Jacuzzi room. Both of these are located in the Riverside historic area of Covington.

Cincinnati

The late, great Winston Churchill reportedly called Cincinnati "the most beautiful inland city in America." To really see any city, you have to skip the freeway and drive city streets and older highways. As you head back to Columbus, here's how you can see some of my favorite places in Cincinnati:

Cross the I-71/75 bridge from Kentucky into Cincinnati, and follow the signs for US 50. Go either east or west and you'll follow the Ohio River. I think this is one of the greatest views of Cincinnati; the mighty river on on side (where you can sometimes see big riverboats), an array of neighborhoods and communities on the other. If you go west you'll pass the sports stadiums and downtown buildings.

If you decide to spend some time downtown, there's a great walking map of downtown Cincinnati featuring all the public art. You will even see the sculpture from the intro to the old WKRP in Cincinnati show.

If you continue west on US 50 go to Mt. Adams. All you have to do is look at a map to see what a cool place you're in: the Cincinnati Civic Garden Center, Harriet Beecher Stowe Memorial, the Taft National Historic Site, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Museum of Natural History, Eden Park, and the Krohn Conservatory are all in or near Mt. Adams. Mt. Adams gives you great views of the Ohio River along with sunsets, and includes an eclectic mix of homes and shops. You could easily spend a whole weekend just in Mt. Adams.

Head back to US 50 and follow the Ohio River either east or west; either way you'll eventually reach I-275 north that will take you back to I-71 and Columbus.

Cincinnati: it's only 150 miles away so it makes a great day trip or overnight get away.
