Today is Columbus Day, the federal holiday designated to honor Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492 (in the Bahamas). Made a US holiday in 1934, the day is also celebrated throughout North America -- as Discovery Day in the Bahamas, as "Dias de las Culturas" (Culture Day) in Costa Rica, and as "Dia de la Raza" (roughly, Hispanic Culture Day) in many Central and South American countries.
Although Columbus, Ohio no longer has a parade, the city's convention and visitors' bureau, Experience Columbus, celebrates our namesake's day with discounts of up to 50 percent on area attractions as well as discounts at area restaurants. For more information and to print the discount flyer/coupon, visit the Experience Columbus Web site.
