September is National Literacy Month

According to the National Center for Family Literacy, more than 30 million Americans have reading skills below basic literacy levels. The Ohio Literacy Council is a state-wide organization aimed at increasing literacy in Ohio. Find out how you can help. In addition, the About Guide to Classic Literature offers a good list of ways to fight illiteracy.

Also, as part of National Literacy Month, the Library of Congress hosts its annual National Book Festival, in Washington September 25, 2010. If you find yourself in the nation's capital, this event, held on the Washington Mall, is free to the public and features 70 of the country's most renowned authors, including Ken Follett, Scott Turow, Jonathan Franzen, and Jane Smiley.
